Agate Housing & Services
Agate is committed to making a difference in our community by helping people live their best lives, on their own terms, and centering the voices and life experiences of people affected by homelessness. We value lived experience as an integral part of our organization, recruiting and hiring individuals who have personally experienced poverty and homelessness. Their expertise and understanding helps Agate best address the disparities and challenges facing our clients and communities.
Agate’s mission centers on ending homelessness and hunger through proactive measures and advocacy. As a Housing First and Harm Reduction agency, Agate focuses on removing barriers to stable housing, such as physical and mental health issues, eviction records, substance use disorders, and discrimination. The organization offers a comprehensive range of services including street outreach, emergency shelter, supportive housing programs, and eviction prevention, prioritizing those with the highest needs.
The Agate Food Centre plays a crucial role in providing over 175,000 hot meals annually and supporting a public food shelf, the Shelf of Hope. This facility addresses a significant need in a neighborhood lacking grocery options, ensuring individuals and families can access nutritious meals amidst housing challenges and rising living costs.
Located near Hennepin County Health Care and Medical Center, the Food Centre serves as a lifeline for many facing medical expenses and housing instability. Agate appeals for community support to sustain these vital services, crucial in alleviating hunger and enabling individuals to maintain their homes and dignity.
With 25% of Minnesota households burdened by high housing costs, Agate’s integrated approach not only addresses immediate hunger but also supports long-term housing stability, aligning with principles of Housing First, Harm Reduction, and Trauma Informed Care. By valuing firsthand experiences and employing evidence-based strategies, Agate continues to make a profound impact in the lives of those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in Minneapolis.
