Pysanky (Ukrainian Egg Dying)

  • Eastside Food Co-op 2551 Northeast Central Avenue Minneapolis, MN, 55418 United States (map)

Join us in this thousands-year-old spring ritual to bring the sun back!  Pysanky, or dyed Ukrainian eggs, are created using beeswax and dye in layers on emptied eggshells with various symbols, designs and colors.  Learn about this tradition, while making your own egg.  Bring yourself - in clothing that may get dyed!  Design ideas and all materials will be provided.

It is said:

“As long as people are making Pysanky the world will continue to exist.”

The legend goes that there is a great monster chained up in a cave.  Each year he sends out his spies into the world to see if people are making easter eggs.  If people are making eggs, the spies come back and tighten the chains, keeping the world safe.  But if people are not making eggs, the spies don’t come back and the chains become looser.  Eventually the monster will come out and it will be the end of the world.

I find it interesting that, traditionally, it was only women who were allowed to make the eggs.  So… the fate of the world rested on women’s shoulders.

Pysanky symbolize rebirth and are not meant to be held onto.  It is my practice each year to make an egg for my son, to plant an egg at the graves of my grandmothers, and to gift remaining eggs to children and as gratitude for those who inspire me to share my creativity with them.

As eggshells were great fertilizer, Pysanky are given as offering for an abundant season of growth.  With the winter we’ve had here in Minneapolis, I am inspired to bury this year’s eggs in our beautiful and badass city this Easter! May we experience a rebirth, a nourishing summer, and a harvest like we’ve never seen!

Participants are welcome to keep your egg creation for your very own.
