The Good Acre

Most seniors (70% according to AARP's Home and Community Preferences Survey) want to age in place, and community based services cost a lot less than nursing home care. Meals on Wheels costs less for the individual, their families, and society in general than institutional care.

Eastside Meals on Wheels serves meals to seniors who cannot prepare their own adequate meals. Our volunteers deliver meals over the lunch hour to qualifying older adults and individuals with disabilities. Our service makes it possible for individuals to remain in their own homes longer, without the trauma and significant cost of nursing home care.

As seniors age, the prevalence of disabilities, including physical, cognitive, and sensory impairments, significantly increases. With the help of our volunteers, we provide nutritious meals to older adults who struggle to shop or cook for themselves. Nutrition is so important for older adults – it’s the key predictor of both frailty and sarcopenia (muscle loss). The gift of a healthy meal could even prevent a future injury or fall.

There is going to be an 8-10% cut in federal funding for Meals on Wheels programs in 2026. Federal funding allows us to offer meals free of cost to qualifying seniors. These funds will help make up the difference.
