SACA Food Shelf & Thrift Store

SACA has been a cornerstone of support in Columbia Heights and neighboring communities for nearly five decades. With a dedicated team of six staff members and over 300 volunteers, SACA plays a crucial role by distributing more than 950,000 pounds of food annually through its client-choice food shelf, produce distributions, and grocery delivery service. Recently, SACA expanded its capacity by acquiring a new building, poised to broaden its footprint and enhance service offerings starting in 2025.

Located close to Eastside Food Co-op, SACA operates as a food shelf and thrift store with a mission to provide essential resources while promoting dignity and independence among its clients. Emphasizing food access, waste reduction, and environmental sustainability, SACA serves approximately 55,000 individuals across Northeast Minneapolis, Columbia Heights, Fridley, Hilltop, and Spring Lake Park. Food is sourced through strategic partnerships with local food banks and grocery retailers, with an impressive average of 10,000 pounds of rescued food weekly, redirecting it from landfills to families in need. Food unfit for human consumption is responsibly allocated to local animal sanctuaries or composted, contributing to sustainable practices.

Beyond food distribution, SACA's onsite thrift store contributes to waste reduction efforts by giving clothing and household items a second life. Unsold or damaged items are recycled through local partnerships, while plastic bags and film are repurposed into park benches in collaboration with Trex and the Spring Lake Park Lions Club.

As SACA prepares for future growth to meet increasing community needs, operational funds are crucial to sustain its impactful programs. Each dollar donated to SACA translates into 10 pounds of food for families facing food insecurity, underscoring the significant impact of contributions from programs like Seedlings. Partnering closely with Eastside Food Co-op on various initiatives underscores SACA's commitment to community collaboration and service excellence in Northeast Minneapolis.
