The mission of the Division of Indian Work (DIW) is to empower American Indian people through culturally-based education, advocacy, counseling, and leadership development. Their programs work to nurture and guide youth, provide services to elders, and address hunger issues in our community.
Food insecurity is still a major disparity among urban American Indians that live in Hennepin County. The Horizons Unlimited Food Shelf is the only culturally-relevant food shelf in the Powderhorn / Phillips area of Minneapolis. Horizons Unlimited provides food access to 3,000 individuals and families each year to help American Indians address the health disparities among this population that include high-blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. DIW works with other community organizations around Minneapolis to help bring fresh fruits and vegetables and other Indigenous ingredients to help the community return to a diet that is healthy.
