Eat Local Farm Tour

Experience the Story Behind Your Meal
Saturday, July 30
EFC is renting a school bus and we will be visiting 2 farms, Eichten's and Big River.
We’ll meet in EFC’s Parking Lot and the bus will depart at 10am!
We are scheduled to be back at EFc by 3pm.
FREE & open to all!
The Story Behind Your Meal
The stories behind your food can be a powerful part of enjoying your meal. The Twin Cities food co-ops’ first-ever 2011 Eat Local Farm Tour on Saturday, July 30th will make these stories come alive for free. On this day only the general public can experience first-hand what local sustainable farming is all about. The event features tours of Minnesota farms, allowing people to meet directly with producers.
The tour kickoffs the Twin Cities food co-ops’ August Eat Local America! Initiative presented by the National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA). Each summer the Eat Local America! Initiative encourages people to visit their participating co-op to experience the flavorful, healthful and economic benefits of eating local. The nine Twin Cities area food co-ops sponsoring the tour are: Eastside, Lakewinds, Linden Hills, Mississippi Market, River Market, Seward, St. Peter, Valley Natural Foods and The Wedge.
“The Twin Cities food co-ops have led the way in connecting consumers with fresh, local foods,” says Liz McMann, Consumer Affairs Manager at Mississippi Market. “We also provide our customers with information about our growers, makers and farmers. Now we want to deepen that farm to table tie by giving the general public the opportunity to meet with and tour the operations of their favorite meat, vegetable and/or dairy producer(s).”
The 2011 Eat Local Farm Tour highlights 11 Minnesota farms in four geographic regions within a 100 mile radius, north, west, southeast, and southwest of the Twin Cities. All tours will be self-guided, meaning tour goers must provide their own means of transportation, whether by car or bicycle. Self-guided tours allow people to visit the farms that they are most interested in. The only cost will be time and gas!
Cedar Summit Dairy Farm in New Prague, MN will be featured on the southwest leg of the tour. Tour goers will be able to meet owner Dave Minar along with visiting the creamery and production facility, including viewing cows, pigs, and chickens at pasture.
“Our population today is far removed from agriculture,” says Minar. “We need to educate our next generation on the importance of sustainable local land development and how it can benefit our local food system. Local food doesn’t have to travel far, helping us conserve our resources. Moreover, it is about getting to meet the farmer and seeing what his operation is all about. It helps build trust and a positive relationship, which is key to selling any product.”
The hours of tour operation on Saturday, July 30th will differ from farm to farm. The guidebooks are available NOW at any of the participating Co-ops, complete with maps, hours, and tour activities. The guidebook has outlined suggested tour routes that would make fun, easy day trips within each geographic region.
The electronic version of the guidebook is available below. (it is a large file - please be patient as it downloads)
About the Eat Local Farm Tour:
The 2011 Eat Local Farm Tour is sponsored by nine of the area Twin Cities food co-ops: Eastside, Lakewinds, Linden Hills, Mississippi Market, River Market, Seward, St. Peter, Valley Natural Foods and The Wedge. The July 30th tour will highlight 11 Minnesota farms, allowing the general public to meet directly with local producers to learn more about our local food system and its importance. The farms participating include Eichten’s Hidden Acres in Center City, MN (bison & cheese), Big River Farm (vegetable) in Marine on St Croix, MN, the Women’s Environmental Institute (vegetable) in North Branch, MN, Ferndale Market in Cannon Falls, MN (turkeys), Thousand Hills in Cannon Falls, MN (beef) Shepherd’s Way in Nerstand, MN (cheese), Gardens of Eagan in Farmington, MN (vegetable), Cedar Summit in New Prague, MN (dairy), East Henderson Farm (vegetable) in Henderson, MN and Living Land Farm (vegetable) in St. Peter, MN and Riverbend Farm (vegetable), located northwest of the Twin Cities.

The American Midwest boasts some of the world’s most productive farmland, but this bounty comes with a price. Farmers, scientists and citizens are seeking solutions that help… keep valuable top soil in place and eliminate buildup of toxic run off that’s polluting our lakes, rivers and the gulf coastline. Troubled Waters tells the story of the changes on the land, and the initiatives people are taking to ensure a more sustainable food production system.\

Sweet Land is a poignant and lyrical celebration of land, love, and the American immigrant experience. Based on Will Weaver’s short story A Gravestone Made of Wheat and shot on location in Southern Minnesota, Sweet Land is that rare independent feature that uses painterly images and understated performances to tell a universal story of love and discovery. David Tumblety’s glorious magic-hour cinematography recalls classic American art cinema like Days of Heaven, transforming the amber majesty of Southern Minnesota’s farm country into an elegiac metaphor for memory, family, and history.

Food Fight ~ Over the course of the 20th century, our food system has been co-opted by corporate forces whose interest do not lie in providing the public with fresh, healthy and sustainably-produced food. Fortunately for America, an alternative emerged from the counter-culture of California in the late 1960s and early 1970s, where a group of political anti-corporate protesters – led by Alice Waters – voiced their dissent by creating a food chain outside of the conventional system.

2011 Plant Sale!
While Supplies Last!
25% off All Plants Wednesday and Thursday, June 1 & 2
40% off All Plants Friday and Saturday, June 3 & 4
60% off All Plants Sunday, June 5 ~ LAST DAY!
13th Annual EFC Plant Sale
Saturday, May 7 through Sunday, June 5
9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays
Self-service from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. weekdays
*Our greenhouses use earth-friendly growing methods
*Annual and perennial flowers, native plants, hybrid and heirloom veggies, raspberries, and a variety of specialty plants will be available at the sale.
Highlights of the 2011 Sale:
• Potting Soil
• Organic Compost
• Straw
New to the plant sale this year and updates on favorites:
• Beets — Plant these for the greens and for the beet itself.
• Blueberries
• Borage — It’s a beautiful annual plant that bees adore. Vivid blue flowers and leaves that taste like cucumber and are stunning in salads.
• Broccoli or Cauliflower Romanesco — Not only is this an amazingly cool-looking vegetable, it’s a deliciously mellow combination of cauliflower and broccoli. The saying is that people, especially children, who don’t like cauliflower, gobble this cruciferous down.
• Epazote (Mexican tea) — Supposedly people aren’t knowledgeable enough to use this Mexican and Caribbean herb; prove them wrong! A seemingly secret ingredient in bean dishes with its cilantro or arugula-like flavor and prevents gas!
• Herbs — Our goal is to have herbs, especially Basil, Cilantro, Dill, Oregano, Parsley and Rosemary, available through Memorial Day weekend.
• Heirloom Tomatoes — The Seed Savers catalogue lists more than 70 heirloom tomatoes available; our growers have chosen the ones that do best in our northern summers. Cherokee Purple will now replace Prudent’s Purple.
• Hybrid Tomatoes — No genetic engineering here, just years of selecting traits. Orange and a larger grape tomato are new this year.
• Kiwi Vines — Now proven to be northern hardy, these vines produce small edible Kiwis within three years. They need to be planted in male and female pairs, so we are selling them that way.
• Lemon Grass — Attention new gardeners: this standard of Asian cooking is incredibly easy to grow!
• Rhubarb
• Roma Tomatoes — We’ll have three types: the famous La Roma and two heirlooms - Amish Paste and San Marzano. These plants almost walk themselves out the door, so this year growers are ready.
• Strawberries — We’ll have them through Memorial Day weekend.
• Sweet Red Peppers — Although all green peppers ripen to red, there are some that turn earlier. We’ll have ample amounts of the early reds, including a small sweet cherry pepper that keeps producing.
• Thai peppers — It was a complete surprise last year how many people wanted these hot peppers; our suppliers couldn’t keep up. So, this year one grower has promised us an endless supply.
Native Plants: Each year we try to carry the standards in natives and to introduce some special ones. The frustrating part is that nature has it’s own time schedule and germination secrets that growers are continually experimenting with. A selection of what we’re hoping to carry includes:
• Indian Paint Brush (Castilleja coccinea). Red and yellow leaves that look like flowers all season.
• Merrybells/Large-flowered Bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora). Easy-to-grow, beautiful draping yellow flowers in the spring, bell-looking seed heads and evergreen leaves.
• Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pennsylvanica.) People are realizing the practicality of this versatile grass-like plant. As non-bunching low perennial, it’s great for boulevard plantings. In shade it’s happy and green, in well-drained sun conditions turns yellow in the fall.
• Side-Oats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula). Cool seed-heads and a striking yellow fall color. It’s a brilliant fall contrast with Little Bluestem and Asters.
• Partridge Pea (Cassia fasciculata ). Not only does this flower attract more bumblebees than believable, it provides nitrogen to the soil and is a long-blooming bright yellow. A re-seeding annual that can be aggressive the first few years, but then settles down.
• Prairie Clovers (Petalostemum sp.). White and purple. Add nitrogen to the soil, delicate flowers and essential for many insects.
• Milkweeds (Asclepias sp.). Plant them for the butterflies and enjoy their beauty. Butterfly (Orange), Marsh (Pink) and Whorled (white).
• Pasque flower (Anemone patens). An orchid of dry prairies. The very early bloom is fuzzy, delicate and beautiful. Native bees need this early bloomer.
• Prairie smoke (Geum triflorum). After a few years this groundcover plant’s more than 30 rosebud-like flowers burst open to produce pink/red seed heads that hang in the air like smoke.
• Pussytoes (Antennaria sp.) A spreading groundcover that will withstand some foot traffic. White flowers look like a cat’s paw, silvery leaves.
• Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum). A plant that means spring to many Minnesotans. Hard to get, but we’re trying again.
• Woodland Sunflower. (Helianthus divaricatus) Goldfinches, butterflies and bees love this shade-tolerant sunflower. It’s difficult to germinate, but with luck we’ll finally get it in.
• Yarrow (Achillia milleflorum). This is one of the tough plants being used in our permeable bike path area as a probable plant that can replace grass as a walk-able groundcover.
• Yellow-Vine Honeysuckle. Will grow in dense shade. Blue/green leaves and yellow flowers. Good for fence coverage and trellises, but not aggressive.
Volunteering at the Plant Sale — EFC Members are encouraged to volunteer at the plant sale. It’s fun, and volunteers receive a 10% discount card for the sale of their choice. Volunteer opportunities are available as follows:
• Flyer Distribution throughout Northeast in the weeks prior to the plant sale.
• Plant Sale Customer Service: Saturdays and Sundays in May – shifts start at 7:30 a.m. and go until 6:00 p.m. No special expertise is required of plant sale volunteers. An orientation check-list will be e-mailed to volunteers prior to their shift, and volunteers will be paired with a “transition buddy” to learn the ropes of helping customers at the sale. A “hospitality room” will be available for plant sale volunteers with beverages and snacks, and to pick up name tags and aprons. For a complete list of shifts available, check out the sign-up clipboard in the store or e-mail shift preferences to amy@eastsidefood.coop.

Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
Thursday, April 21
7–9pm

At Eastside Food Co-op in the Granite Studio
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period."

You Never Bike Alone is a feature length documentary, looking at the ways in which cyclists are building critical mass and changing the face of the city. Drawing on footage filmed over the course of the last decade and through interviews with people from all backgrounds, You Never Bike Alone captures the fun, the road rage, the camaraderie, and the freakiness of riding a bike in the city today. As well as a humorous and entertaining look at how city cyclists are mobilizing, You Never Bike Alone looks at the implications of transportation decisions by politicians at municipal and provincial levels and asks are we up to the challenge of making a truly livable city.

This movie celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.
Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.

Co-op Movie Night

Screening "Malls R Us"
Thursday, December 16
7–9 pm
FREE + Popcorn & Beverages
Eastside Food Co-op in the Granite Studio
This provocative documentary seriously argues that malls serve similar functions today that cathedrals, temples, parliaments and town squares did in earlier times. Then the film slowly works its way around to the possibility that they may be a plague upon the Earth. Ironic, sobering and visually stunning, this surprising documentary offers a trip to the mall like no other.

Community Supported Agriculture
CSA Fair
Come meet and greet our local farmers and purchase a CSA share!
Saturday, April 2
11a.m.–2p.m.
At Eastside Food Co-op in the Granite Studio
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) provides individuals an opportunity to form partnerships with local producers. A consumer becomes a member of a CSA Farm by purchasing a share in a farm’s harvest, which helps cover yearly operating costs. In return for that investment, he or she receives fresh product, delivered to the Co-op weekly throughout the growing season. In this way, consumers and producers share the risks and rewards of growing food together.

A Talk - The Minnesota Health Plan
Tours,Talks & Thespians
A Talk – Subject: The Minnesota Health Plan
Guest Speaker - Senator John Marty
Saturday, October 16 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.
EastSide Food Co-op, in the Granite Studio - 2551 Central Avenue N.E. in Minneapolis
Refreshments will be provided.
Anethicalpolitician? Anoxymoron! You exclaim. I think not, Meet Senator John Marty.
Senator Marty has represented several northeast metro suburbs in the Minnesota Senate
since 1987.Senator Marty distinguished himself immediately as an independent-minded
progressive who is not afraid to take on special interests. He took on one of the most
powerful lobbyists in the country, “Big Tobacco”, when he fought for legislation to prohibit
smoking in schools and hospitals, banning free distribution of cigarettes.
Since then, Senator Marty has established himself as a leader on ethics issues at the
Legislature and has continuously fought to remove special interest money from the political
process. He has also been a consistent advocate for policies that promote fairness, equality
and tolerance, as well as those that invest in prevention—investing in healthcare, schools,
and jobs to build a better future and prevent problems before they start.
Senator Marty is the designer and author of the Minnesota Health Plan, a statewide plan that
would cover every Minnesotan for all of their medical needs including prescription drugs,
dental care, mental health and chemical dependency treatment, while saving money through
prevention, efficiency, and elimination of bureaucracy.
There are currently about 400,000 Minnesotans without any health insurance and at least 1
million more who have insurance, but still cannot afford to pay their medical bills due to high
copayments, deductibles, and care not covered by their insurance added on top of their
premiums! Although the recent federal healthcare reform will make some inroads, the MN
Health Plan is the only plan that would eliminate the problem of un-insurance and under-
insurance in our state.
Why should we care? And what can we do to bring about this change sooner rather than
later?
Senator Marty will address these questions and more during the evening’s talk.

Co-op Movie Night!
Forks Over Knives
Eastside Food Co-op in the Granite Studio
FREE + refreshments
FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional scientist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. Inspired by remarkable discoveries in their young careers, these men conducted several groundbreaking studies. Their separate research led them to the same startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented—and in many cases reversed—by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. In addition, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes, and are taught by their doctors to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments.

A Benefit for Land Stewardship Project
LSP office backyard
821 E. 35th Street
Minneapolis
Join us to support Land Stewardship Project's work to build sustainable and just food systems in Minnesota's small towns and urban areas. Minnesota has rich agricultural land and farmers growing good food, yet our food still travels an average of 1,500 miles to our tables. Small towns and core urban neighborhood often have no place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods.
Despite these challenges, Minnesotans continue to develop creative ways to feed ourselves, our communities and steward the land.On May 15 we will hear from farmers who are doing just that in rural Minnesota and the heart of Minneapolis, and hear updates on LSP's work to cultivate strong food and farming systems.
* Laura Frerichs of Loon Organics in Hutchinson, MN - hear about her organic vegetable farm, working to make a good living, and providing healthy food
* Jeremy McAdams of Cherry Tree House Mushrooms - urban mushroom production and how his Minneapolis neighborhood is cultivating food and community.

Friday, November 19, 2010
5-8 p.m.
At Eastside Food Co-op in the Granite Studio
2551 Central Avenue NE
Mata Ortiz is home to a revival of an ancient Mesoamerican pottery tradition, inspired by pottery from the ancient city of Paquime, located in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico. This artistic movement is due to the efforts of Juan Quezada, and Spencer MacCallum, an anthropologist who discovered Juan’s earliest works and recognized in them the potential of a pottery master. Juan taught his family and neighbors, who in turn taught their families and friends. Today Mata Ortiz is home to nearly 500 potters!
Mata Ortiz pots are exquisite coil and pinch-built pieces. Decoration is applied with handmade fine brushes, often made from children’s hair. Today’s Mata Ortiz artists incorporate personal stylized design and decoration. This blend of cultural expression and artistic freedom has transformed the community and produced a phenomenon in the art world. Mata Ortiz pots (ollas) have been exhibited nationally in the USA, including the Field Museum in Chicago and the American Museum of Ceramic Art.
Marko Fields is a 2008 McKnight Fellow in Ceramics. Widely exhibited, published and collected, his work is in the permanent collections of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute, the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, and Arizona State University’s Museum of Art. Resident Artist and Professor of Visual Art at Concordia University, St. Paul, Fields is known for his narrative and often quirky ceramics that display a wide variety of techniques and approaches to clay.

Photography Show at EFC
Addis: Photographs from the Capital of Ethiopia
By Jeffery Skemp
Jeffrey Skemp has been full-time in the grocery department at Eastside Food Co-op since 2008. He was raised on a farm on the outskirts of La Crosse, Wisconsin. In the fall of 2006 he was invited by two friends to travel to their country of origin, Ethiopia, and be part of their wedding. He readily accepted their invitation and made the trip to Ethiopia in the winter of 2007. It is there he rediscovered photography.
Jeffrey is also a poet and is honored to have won the 2010 VERVE Intermedia Arts Grant for Performance Poetry as well as the 2010 Jerome Travel and Study Grant for Literature which will allow him to return to Ethiopia in 2011. More of his photographs can be viewed at illkept.blogspot.com.
A note of interest: Addis Ababa translates from Amharic to English as "New Flower", Addis meaning "new" and Ababa meaning "flower". Also, within informal conversation with friends and family, Addis Ababa is often referred to simply as "Addis" to those who are familiar with it.
All photographs are for sale!
