Sweet Land
Thursday, August 18

Eastside Food Co-op in the Granite Studio

Sweet Land is a poignant and lyrical celebration of land, love, and the American immigrant experience. Based on Will Weaver’s short story A Gravestone Made of Wheat and shot on location in Southern Minnesota, Sweet Land is that rare independent feature that uses painterly images and understated performances to tell a universal story of love and discovery. David Tumblety’s glorious magic-hour cinematography recalls classic American art cinema like Days of Heaven, transforming the amber majesty of Southern Minnesota’s farm country into an elegiac metaphor for memory, family, and history.

It tells the story of Earth's most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility--from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation and brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that the soil has. The real change lies in our notion of what dirt is. "The only remedy for disconnecting people from the natural world is connecting them to it again." What we've destroyed, we can heal.

Food Fight ~ Over the course of the 20th century, our food system has been co-opted by corporate forces whose interest do not lie in providing the public with fresh, healthy and sustainably-produced food. Fortunately for America, an alternative emerged from the counter-culture of California in the late 1960s and early 1970s, where a group of political anti-corporate protesters – led by Alice Waters – voiced their dissent by creating a food chain outside of the conventional system.

You Never Bike Alone is a feature length documentary, looking at the ways in which cyclists are building critical mass and changing the face of the city. Drawing on footage filmed over the course of the last decade and through interviews with people from all backgrounds, You Never Bike Alone captures the fun, the road rage, the camaraderie, and the freakiness of riding a bike in the city today. As well as a humorous and entertaining look at how city cyclists are mobilizing, You Never Bike Alone looks at the implications of transportation decisions by politicians at municipal and provincial levels and asks are we up to the challenge of making a truly livable city.

FRESH
Friday, June 18 at 7-9pm Granite Studio

This movie celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.
Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.

Local Probiotic Beverage Sampled
Eat & DRINK Local!
Come sample a great Local Kombuch!
Unpeeled is a 100% naturally cultured (kombucha) green tea with cold-pressed fresh crushed, raw ingredients, then barrel-aged to maximize nutritional value (probiotics) and to promote a fresh, crisp, smooth flavor.
Unpeeled is a naturally fermented beverage which provides a rich source of enzymes and probiotics not found in heated or processed foods or beverages.
WHAT DOES ROCKET SCIENCE HAVE TO DO WITH UNPEELED?
Dr. Mike Johnson, the creator and producer of Unpeeled, worked as an engineer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center for a hot 4+ years in Houston Texas. He used microorganisms to remove products from water that would be used for drinking water by astronauts on the space shuttle. Later while working as a chiropractor in his Cathedral Hill Health Clinic in St. Paul, he was seeking an alternative from sugared/caffeinated beverages to provide to his patients. He started researching functional beverages, something that could supply the body with a healthful purpose rather than unhealthy beverages. His career turned full circle. Using his NASA experience he developed a way to use beneficial microorganisms to add nutrition to beverages. He studied probiotics and designed fermentation processes that would promote healthful nutrients. His idea worked!! Two years of development and testing resulted in the creation of Unpeeled. Unpeeled not only tasted great but also supplied “Living Beneficial Nutrition”.
The first two flavors of Unpeeled are Ginger Crush and Citrus Press. Try the six new Unpeeled flavors (Cranberry-Pomegranate, Grape Blast, Strawberry Lime-aide, Mango Orange Passion) and Drink to your Health!

This special event is the first in a series of readings by local writers sponsored by Friends in celebration of the “new” library and of the recently-organized local Friends group.
Readers may well know Sarah’s books and other writings. She has published internationally acclaimed novels and short stories. Her first book, These Granite Islands, is set in Minnesota. Vacationland, is “a volume of interconnected stories” focused on a crumbling resort hosting a mix of visitors who tell the history of the place over four decades. Shelter is a memoir that Sarah describes as “a skinny dip into the past.” Sarah’s work is also included in the very popular Fiction on a Stick now being read by Minnesotans wherever they may be. Web readers will find several excerpts from Sarah’s writing online on the author’s generous website.
Radio listeners have likely heard one of the several interviews that Sarah has shared on local talk shows. During March of 2011 Sarah was interviewed by Euan Kerr, Ian Leask on Write on Radio! (KFAI) and Kerri Miller on MPR Midmorning. The interviews are all available for listening online.
Sarah offers a great interview, which portends a delightful evening at the Library. Consider this response to a questioner’s query concerning her thoughts on e-books: Sarah says, “By the time my 22 year old son’s generation are THE book consumers, Wally Lamb novels will be repurposed as doorstops, and big [publishing] houses that haven’t embraced the genre will have hung by their own petards and lack of vision.”
Reflecting on her own library experiences Sarah recalls recent times when she was
an itinerant library bum.”
During the down days at Northeast Sarah says she alternated among Bottineau, St. Anthony and her favorites in her hometown to the East. She reflects that she is “thrilled” that she will be the inaugural author talk presenter at the “lovely” renovated Northeast library. She expresses a generous hope to remain involved with plans for future Friends of Northeast- sponsored readings by local authors.
The evening with Sarah Stonich is free and open to the public. No reservations required.
Friends of the Northeast Library is a membership organization of friends and neighbors who support the local library. For more information click on the link or contact Friends at Northeast@supporthclib.org, call the library (612 543 6775) or pick up Friends information next time you’re visiting Northeast Library.

Celebrate World Fair Trade Day with the Sierra Club and MN Fair Trade Coalition!
Join us for a movie that exposes the costly side of "free" trade and learn how you can be involved in creating positive change.
The Emperor's New Clothes: A Cautionary Tale of Free Trade
The Emperor's New Clothes: A Cautionary Tale of Free Trade takes an impassioned look at the effects of economic globalization on workers in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Filmed over a three-year period, the film looks at life before, during and after the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
The movie follows a Canadian delegation of workers to Mexico to see where some of their jobs have gone. They find the lawns in front of industrial plants greened by sprinklers, while some Mexican workers live in cardboard shacks without running water. It takes an incisive look at the profound effects that economic agreements between big business and government can have on human lives, including increased cuts to social programs, massive unemployment, environmental damage, and demoralization.

Benefit for Land Stewardship Project
Celebrate Good Food & Farming from the Twin Cities to greater Minnesota
A Benefit for Land Stewardship Project
LSP office backyard
821 E. 35th Street
Minneapolis
Join us to support Land Stewardship Project's work to build sustainable and just food systems in Minnesota's small towns and urban areas. Minnesota has rich agricultural land and farmers growing good food, yet our food still travels an average of 1,500 miles to our tables. Small towns and core urban neighborhood often have no place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods.
Despite these challenges, Minnesotans continue to develop creative ways to feed ourselves, our communities and steward the land.On May 15 we will hear from farmers who are doing just that in rural Minnesota and the heart of Minneapolis, and hear updates on LSP's work to cultivate strong food and farming systems.
* Laura Frerichs of Loon Organics in Hutchinson, MN - hear about her organic vegetable farm, working to make a good living, and providing healthy food
* Jeremy McAdams of Cherry Tree House Mushrooms - urban mushroom production and how his Minneapolis neighborhood is cultivating food and community.
Enjoy appetizers donated by many excellent local restaurants, including:
* Modern Cafe
* Brasa Premium Rotisserie
* Bryant Lake Bowl
* Cafe Barbette
* Red Stag Supper Club
* Bedlam Theatre
To RSVP or to learn more about our benefit, please contact Sarah Claassen at 612-722-6377. RSVPs are helpful but not required.

The major storyline traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional scientist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. Inspired by remarkable discoveries in their young careers, these men conducted several groundbreaking studies. Their separate research led them to the same startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented—and in many cases reversed—by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. In addition, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes, and are taught by their doctors to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments.

Julie Johnson & The No-Accounts
Julie Johnson & The No-Accounts at the Black Dog Coffee & Wine Bar
Julie Johnson & The No-Accounts is made up of me on flute, Doug Otto on vocals and guitar, and Drew Druckrey on guitar, resonator guitar, vocals, and mandolin. If you missed our debut show at the Fine Line, or left that show wanting more, here's your chance ...
We play folk, old country, and blues with unusual stylizations and arrangements. Currently we're adding to our standard repertoire by finding and arranging old North Woods logging and voyageur songs, looking for the Upper Midwest's equivalent to the South's rich roots tradition. Our set includes a version of Leadbelly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” influenced by music from Carmen, and a version of the little-known Bob Dylan tune “Winterlude” for flute, vocals, mandolin, and bass clarinet.

October 16-22 is "Co-op Week" in MN!
Secretary of State Mark Ritchie Recognizes "Co-op Week" by Announcing that Minnesota is Ranked Number One in Cooperative Businesses in the Nation!
St. Paul, Minn.-October 20, 2011-Secretary of State Mark Ritchie today recognized "Co-op Week" which is observed the week of October 16-22 by announcing that Minnesota is home to more cooperative businesses than any other state and several of the nation's largest co-ops are headquartered here.
"Minnesota ranks number one in sheer numbers of cooperatives and our residents enjoy the tremendous benefit co-ops bring," Ritchie said. "Our state's co-ops generate more than $34 billion in revenue and provide good jobs for 46,000 Minnesota residents."
Owned and governed by their members, co-ops provide products and services as close as possible to actual cost, with profit margins plowed back into the business or returned to the members. Many individuals are members of more than one co-op.
Nearly 1,000 cooperative businesses serve approximately 3.4 million members in Minnesota. These co-ops provide goods and services ranging from farm supplies and farm credit, to electricity, petroleum products, grain marketing, dairy products and processing, housing, health care, telecommunications, ethanol and sugar production, credit unions, and food co-ops.
"October is traditionally designated as the month to honor co-ops and the contribution they make to stronger communities and it's fitting that the tradition began right here in Minnesota," said Cooperative Network President and CEO Bill Oemichen. "The tradition of celebrating Co-op Month has deep roots in Minnesota. While the idea of celebrating the special nature of cooperatives first appeared in 1924 in Waukegan, Illinois, it was former Minnesota Governor Luther Youngdahl who signed the first official Minnesota October Co-op Month proclamation in 1948, at the request of the Minnesota Association of Cooperatives (now Cooperative Network)."
NCB Financial Group, parent of the National Consumer Cooperative Bank, this week published its annual report detailing the top 100 co-ops in the nation and their contribution to the economy. Four Minnesota-based cooperatives were among the top two revenue producers by business sector in the NCB survey for 2010.
• CHS Inc., based in St. Paul, was in first place on the NCB Top 100 list, with $25.3 billion in revenues for 2010.
• Land O'Lakes, Inc., also based in St. Paul, came in second with revenues of $11.1 billion.
• Agribank, FSB, also in St. Paul, placed eighth nationwide with $4 billion in revenues.
• HealthPartners, Inc., headquartered in South Bloomington, was in 10th place with 2010 revenues of $3.6 billion.
"Large or small, urban or rural, the key concept of a cooperative business is friends, neighbors and fellow members delivering value for each other and their communities," explained Ritchie.

Casket Cinema's Wojahn a McKnight Recipient!
MCKNIGHT SCREENWRITING AND FILMMAKING FELLOWS PRESENT THEIR AWARD-WINNING WORK
Each year, the McKnight Foundation and IFP Media Arts award four $25,000 Fellowships to Minnesota’s mid-career filmmakers and screenwriters. This year, the talented 2009 Fellowship recipients will present their work and answer your questions on March 10th at The Loft Literary Center. We’re calling them the “McKnighty-Nights.” Bedtime snacks will follow.
McKnighty-Nights, Part II: The Filmmakers
It’s story time with the 2009 McKnight Filmmaking Fellows! Cozy up to these talented artists as they reveal the magic that got them their $25,000 Fellowships. (And by “magic” we mean hard work, talent, and good luck.) Rolf Belgum and Mark Wojahn will discuss their latest projects and show clips from their award-winning films. These filmmakers tell the stories of families who are a bit…odd, in one way or another. But their filmic approaches to these stories are dramatically different. Emily Goldberg will moderate a discussion about the fine line between fiction and non-fiction, revelation and exploitation, and the essence of what makes a movie worth watching.
Rolf Belgum’s film Driver 23 is the lowest budget film ever purchased by a major network and aired on the Sundance Channel from 2001-2003.
Mark Wojahn sees "film and activism as means for building and connecting with community, for raising personal collective awareness, and for exploring the realms of consciousness and humanity." Reviews of Mark's work have appeared in Mother Jones, City Pages, Star Tribune, and the New Art Examiner. Awards include 2004 Best Film of the Twin Cities, (City Pages), 2003 Artist of the Year, (City Pages). His films include What America Needs: from Sea to Shining Sea, 2003 and What America Needs: An Interior Expedition, 1995. His most recent film, Trampoline, a documentary feature about a South Minneapolis family with four teenagers, will be screening in festivals in 2010.
Emily Goldberg’s Emmy award-winning documentary work has screened in numerous film festivals, from the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam to the Museum of Modern Art.

On May 5, the Northeaster newspaper ran this full-page ad promoting Edison High School and its pathway elementary and middle schools. Click here for a link to the Northeaster. (The ad is page 8).

Dealing with Winter & Vata
Ayurveda is roughly translated from Sanskrit as “the complete knowledge for a long life.” This natural approach to healing has existed for over 4,000 years and it remains deeply rooted in Indian culture today.
Treatments are largely based around balancing the three fundamental energies – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurvedic theory states that each human is made up of a unique combination of doshas that create our temperaments and personalities. When our doshas exist in unequal quantities – we become ill. Contrary to other medicinal approaches which seek to eliminate the cause of disease, Ayurvedic principles indicate that illness is a symptom of imbalance. If we are able to balance our complex bodies, we will feel energy and vitality.
In order for Ayurveda to be effective, one must look at it as a lifelong process of incorporating new practices in your daily life. Prevention is as important as treatment – a stark difference to the current approach of pain killers, sleep meds, and quick fixes. A patient is encouraged to make practical changes in their life. Nearly anything can be used as medicine – herbs, foods, drinks, smells, touches, environments, and lifestyles...
Although a variety of imbalances can occur in different people, the vast majority of us suffer with a Vata dominance due to our fast paced, high stress, sugar laden lifestyles. It leaves most of us breathless, anxious, and exhausted. Winter can be especially aggravating for a Vata, as the weather turns dry and cold (characteristics that are already prominent within the body). When we feel the stress of excess Vata, it is best to counteract it with grounding rituals, nurturing activities, gentle exercises, wet foods, and warmth. These are especially important in the days leading up to Christmas as we get busier and our lives are more chaotic.
Signs of too much Vata in the body are:
- dry skin and eyes\chapped lips
- stiff, aching muscles
- a fretful, worried, and racing mind
- inability to focus
- a short memory span
- irregular digestion\constipation
- lack of menstruation (for women)
- unstable emotions
Warm foods and herbs are extremely beneficial, as are warming spices (cinnamon, ginger, pepper, licorice, etc). A little sesame oil with vegetables is well digested by a Vata-type. Fish, eggs, and the dark meat of chicken and turkey are good protein options. For a vegan, nuts are especially useful. It is important that you do not skips meals and set a routine for your food and sleep – keeping a consistent pattern of work and rest during the week. Although exercise is important, Vatas tend to overdo it. Try quiet, calm exercises like walking or yoga to ease the mind. Supplements that are helpful for Vata are tulsi, coconut oil (take a teaspoon internally and use externally to soothe the body), garlic, tumeric, ginger, cardamom, and bee pollen.
When Vata is in balance, we are enthusiastic, creative, energetic, and full of life. Fine tuning our daily routines so that we are enriched and not hindered by Vata can be a challenge, but one that is more than worth the effort.

Marko Fields and friends from Mata Ortiz
Small ceramic work by Marko Fields and ollas by artists from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Friday, November 19, 2010
5-8 p.m.
At Eastside Food Co-op in the Granite Studio
2551 Central Avenue NE
Mata Ortiz is home to a revival of an ancient Mesoamerican pottery tradition, inspired by pottery from the ancient city of Paquime, located in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico. This artistic movement is due to the efforts of Juan Quezada, and Spencer MacCallum, an anthropologist who discovered Juan’s earliest works and recognized in them the potential of a pottery master. Juan taught his family and neighbors, who in turn taught their families and friends. Today Mata Ortiz is home to nearly 500 potters!
Mata Ortiz pots are exquisite coil and pinch-built pieces. Decoration is applied with handmade fine brushes, often made from children’s hair. Today’s Mata Ortiz artists incorporate personal stylized design and decoration. This blend of cultural expression and artistic freedom has transformed the community and produced a phenomenon in the art world. Mata Ortiz pots (ollas) have been exhibited nationally in the USA, including the Field Museum in Chicago and the American Museum of Ceramic Art.
Marko Fields is a 2008 McKnight Fellow in Ceramics. Widely exhibited, published and collected, his work is in the permanent collections of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute, the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, and Arizona State University’s Museum of Art. Resident Artist and Professor of Visual Art at Concordia University, St. Paul, Fields is known for his narrative and often quirky ceramics that display a wide variety of techniques and approaches to clay.

The lessons of Jamaica--where these policies have been in effect for nearly twenty-five years--extend far beyond its shores. Legacies and Impacts
Celebrate Eat Local Month!
Learn more about Food Co-ops at a new exhibit of work by Martin Brown
Martin Brown has been an employee of Eastside Food Co-op’s produce department since 2008. He produced “Legacies and Impacts” as a senior project for his degree in Political Gastronomics at Antioch College (Yellow Springs, Ohio). Martin enjoys farming and farmers’ markets, but dislikes framing.
The Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse will host an exhibit called “Legacies and Impacts” – an
exploration of the history and significance of Minnesota’s consumer food co-ops. The exhibit tells the stories of the co-op movement during the “Old
Wave” on the Iron Range, the “New Wave” in the 1970s, and the “Impacts and New Legacies” of the current co-op expansion. Pictures of the storytellers
are combined with their perspectives of the history of co-ops to create a wide-ranging view of how the driving force behind co-ops has changed over
the years.
The exhibit will be on display in the Rotunda of the City Hall and Courthouse building during the month of August. The exhibit is free and open to the
public. The Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse is open to the public from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more
information, please visit the Municipal Building Commission Web site located at http://www.municipalbuildingcommission.org.
The City Hall and Courthouse is an architectural treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mosaic is presented through the City
Hall and Courthouse rotating exhibit program, which seeks to educate, inform and promote city and county programs, history and art to city and county
staff and the general public. In addition, free public tours are held the third Wednesday of every month or by appointment; please call the Municipal
Building Commission Tour and Event Information Line at 612-596-9535. The MBC has served as the steward for the historic Minneapolis City Hall and
Hennepin County Courthouse since 1904.

Photography Show at EFC
Addis: Photographs from the Capital of Ethiopia
By Jeffery Skemp
Jeffrey Skemp has been full-time in the grocery department at Eastside Food Co-op since 2008. He was raised on a farm on the outskirts of La Crosse, Wisconsin. In the fall of 2006 he was invited by two friends to travel to their country of origin, Ethiopia, and be part of their wedding. He readily accepted their invitation and made the trip to Ethiopia in the winter of 2007. It is there he rediscovered photography.
Jeffrey is also a poet and is honored to have won the 2010 VERVE Intermedia Arts Grant for Performance Poetry as well as the 2010 Jerome Travel and Study Grant for Literature which will allow him to return to Ethiopia in 2011. More of his photographs can be viewed at illkept.blogspot.com.
A note of interest: Addis Ababa translates from Amharic to English as "New Flower", Addis meaning "new" and Ababa meaning "flower". Also, within informal conversation with friends and family, Addis Ababa is often referred to simply as "Addis" to those who are familiar with it.
All photographs are for sale!
